Barry Allen, a crime scene assistant at the Central City Police Department, is struck by lightning during a storm that is created after the explosion of a particle accelerator from the S. T. A. R. Labs. After being in a coma for nine months, Barry wakes up in S. T. A. R. Labs, placed in the care of its founder, Harrison Wells, and his assistants, Dr. Caitlin Snow and Cisco Ramon. Barry learns that he can move at incredible speeds, and that there were other "metahumans" created from the explosion. One of them, Clyde Mardon, robs banks with his ability to control the weather. To stop Mardon, Barry is equipped with a suit designed by Cisco that can withstand his high speed. He tracks down Mardon and, along with Detective Joe West, who learns of Barry's abilities, Barry is able to stop Mardon, who is killed by Joe. With the help of his new powers, Barry vows to exonerate his father, Henry, who is in prison for the murder of his wife, Nora, whom Barry saw killed by another metahuman at a young age. He chooses the alias "Flash" for his alter ego. Wells, who has secretly discovered that he is not paralyzed and does not need glasses, reads a newspaper from 2024 that talks about the missing status of the Outbreak.
